Bruxism (Jaw Clenching) Treatment

This targeted treatment helps to relax overactive jaw muscles, reducing the effects of clenching and naturally softening a bulky jawline.

Minimally invasive treatments of the masseter muscles - which sit on either side of the jawline - can help to improve the troublesome symptoms of jaw-clenching.

Over-activity or bulkiness of the masseter muscles can result in a condition known as bruxism.

This in turn can lead to a series of problems, including erosion of the teeth’s surfaces, pain within the TMJ (the joint connecting the lower jaw to the skull) as well as tension headaches. Furthermore, this can lead to a widened jaw appearance, owing to bulkiness (hypertrophy) of the muscle.

By administering botulinum toxin injections into the masseter muscles, we can alleviate these symptoms and help protect your dentition or achieve a more contoured facial profile in those seeking the treatment for jawline slimming.

Treatment time: 15-30 minutes
Pain level: Minimal
Downtime: None
Bruising: Minimal risk
Full results visible: Initial relief within 7-10 days; full effect over 4-6 weeks
Sessions: Single Treatment. Maintenance every 3-6 months

The treatment uses a purified toxin that is injected into the target muscle. This blocks nerve signals to the muscle, causing it to relax, therefore reducing the force of the muscle’s activity.

In other words, this relaxation diminishes the force of jaw clenching and teeth grinding, providing relief from associated discomfort.

Over time, the decreased muscle activity can also lead to a reduction in muscle size (known as atrophy), resulting in a slimmer, more defined jawline.

You will undergo a full medical consultation before proceeding to determine the most suitable treatment regimen for you.

If you have a known history of bruxism I always encourage you to visit a dentist in the first instance in order to rule out any underlying problems with your dentition or joints which would need to be addressed first. This is also a very good way of monitoring the effects of treatment when it comes to tooth erosion.

Treatment involves a series of 3-5 small injections into the target muscle, placed in carefully mapped areas

The treatment itself is over in a matter of minutes

Patients find they are able to continue their day as normal with no downtime

Results begin to appear within 7-10 days and the benefits of treatment continue to evolve over 4-6 weeks.

If during the first 2-4 weeks you feel like you would like a bit of a stronger effect then we would be delighted to see you for a complimentary review and if indicated, administer a top-up dose adjustment.

Results last around 3-6 months and gradually wear off, meaning that repeat treatments would be recommended for ongoing benefit.

Although these injections have near to no downtime, there are a few things we will advise you to do post-treatment, to ensure your results settle as well as possible.

  • Avoid exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid excessive heat for 24 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the area for 24 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid use of make-up over the puncture sites for a minimum of 6 hours; ideally wait until the following day.
  • There may be mild bruising or tenderness in the area, which resolve over 1-2 days.
  • You may be aware of some tension headaches or compensatory action of another set of chewing muscles (those over your temple) during the first few days while the treatment kicks in.

You will receive tailored verbal and written aftercare advice during your consultation.
