Venous Lake Removal
We offer effective and safe, plastic-surgeon-led treatments for vascular lesions affecting your lips.
A venous lake is a soft, dark blue or purple bump that commonly appears on sun-exposed areas, especially the lower lip. It forms when a small vein becomes dilated and permanently enlarged, creating a visible blood-filled cavity under the surface of the skin.
These lesions are:
- Most common in adults aged 40+
- Associated with chronic sun exposure
- Typically soft, compressible and non-cancerous
- Sometimes confused with pigmented moles.
While venous lakes are harmless and don’t pose a health risk, many people opt for removal due to their prominent discolouration and position (often on the lip) or if they are prone to getting traumatised.
At Dr. Jenny Clinic, we offer safe and effective removal of venous lakes using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Treatment is quick and well tolerated, with very little downtime.
Treatment Options Include:
- Electrosurgery / Cautery: A targeted electrical current is used to shrink and seal the venous lake, causing it to flatten and fade
- Shave Excision: For larger or thicker lesions, or where these is diagnostic uncertainty warranting a sample for biopsy. The venous lake is removed flush to the skin’s surface, followed by electrocautery to its base.
Due to the vascular nature of these lesions, we do advise that they can sometimes re-occur or may require 1-3 sessions to fully clear.
Following your consultation, you will be consented for your procedure.
The lesion(s) to be removed is photographed for your medical records.
The area is then numbed using a numbing cream or numbing injection.
The operative area is then cleansed with an antiseptic solution and the surrounding area is covered with a sterile sheet or drape to ensure that infection risk is minimised.
The lesion is then treated using the appropriate technique.
The area is then covered with a thick wound ointment such as a Vaseline/paraffin.
Most procedures take between 15-30 minutes and you can return to normal activities shortly afterwards.
Your aftercare advice is an important step to ensuring optimal healing.
- Keep the wound covered and dry for 1-2 days.
- Apply Vaseline to the treatment area 2-3 times a day until any scabbing present gently peels away.
- It can take 7-10 days for the mild scabbing to peel off: Avoid strenuous activity, swimming or saunas until this process is complete.
- Avoid make-up and active or harsh skincare ingredients over the healing areas until they settle.
- You will then be left with pink or slightly darker marks in the treated areas which will then continue to fade and blend in as time goes on.
- Protect fresh scars from UV radiation by using high factor SPF to reduce risk inflammation, irritation and redness.
We will schedule a follow-up if required and you are always encouraged to contact us with any post-treatment concerns.

We understand that our patients can be very busy with their daily lives and therefore it is ideal for most to be able to combine their consultation and treatment during the same visit.
Therefore, although we do offer the option to proceed with treatment on the same day (known as a ‘See and Treat’ appointment), we will only do so if you are certain you would like to proceed and if it is safe to proceed on the same day.
If you would prefer to think through all the treatment options first and make provisions for potential downtime, restrictions in exercise etc, then it is best for us to carry our your consultation first, then plan a separate visit for your treatment.
As an ethical medical clinic, we never want you to feel pressured to undergo treatment on the same day, therefore rest assured that your consultation fee is fully redeemable against your treatment, even if you decide to delay your treatment by several weeks or months.
As we always advise patients in the clinic, never feel rushed to commit to an elective, non-emergency procedure and take all the time you need to make that decision.
Yes, venous lakes can reoccur over time, particularly if underlying factors like sun damage or fragile blood vessels persist. In some cases, a lesion may not fully resolve after the first treatment and may require further sessions.
This is why we advise that more than one treatment may be needed to achieve optimal results and minimise the chance of recurrence.
