What are milia?
Milia form when keratin, a protein found in dead skin cells, becomes trapped beneath the skin instead of shedding naturally. The result is a small, cyst-like structure that feels firm to the touch and doesn’t respond to typical spot treatments or exfoliation.
Milia are small, firm, white or yellowish bumps that form just beneath the surface of the skin. While completely harmless, they’re often stubborn and can be cosmetically bothersome, especially when they cluster around the eyes or appear in visible areas of the face.
They’re most commonly found on:
- The face, particularly around the eyes, nose and cheeks
- The eyelids
- The forehead
There are two types:
Primary milia: appear spontaneously, often in otherwise healthy skin
Secondary milia: occur after skin trauma, burns, laser treatments or from using heavy, occlusive skincare products
While they’re not a medical concern, and skin texture is natural, many people choose to have professional milia removal for aesthetic reasons.
How we remove milia
We use a sterile, high-precision extraction technique under magnification. The procedure is quick, safe, and performed in a clinical setting to ensure minimal trauma to the skin and excellent cosmetic results.
What to expect from a milia removal:
Consultation and Consent
We’ll assess the area and discuss your treatment plan. You’ll be consented for the procedure, and photographs will be taken for your medical records.
Preparation
The skin is cleansed with antiseptic solution to minimise the risk of infection. We’ll numb the area using either a topical anaesthetic cream or a small injection, depending on the location and number of milia.
Extraction
Using a sterile fine needle or blade, we create a tiny entry point in the skin. The milia are then carefully extracted using gentle pressure. Most procedures take around 15-30 minutes.
Milia Removal Aftercare and Support
You’ll receive tailored aftercare advice to support healing and reduce the risk of pigmentation or scarring. If you’re prone to milia, we’ll also discuss preventative skincare options to reduce recurrence.
Aftercare advice
After your milia removal, the treated area may be red, slightly swollen, or have pin-prick bleeding. This typically settles within 24-48 hours. In sensitive skin types, redness may persist for 3-5 days.
To support healing:
- Keep the area dry for the first 24 hours
- Avoid make-up and harsh skincare until the skin has settled
- Avoid swimming, steam rooms, or saunas for a few days
- Apply high-factor SPF daily to reduce pigmentation risk
- Avoid exfoliation or active ingredients on the area until advised
How to help prevent milia
While not all milia can be prevented, especially primary types that develop spontaneously, there are ways to reduce your risk particularly for those prone to secondary milia.
Choose non-comedogenic skincare
Heavy, occlusive products like thick balms, oils, or rich eye creams can block natural skin shedding. Opt for lightweight, breathable formulations especially around the eyes.
Exfoliate gently, but regularly
Encouraging healthy cell turnover helps prevent keratin build-up. Use gentle chemical exfoliants (like low-strength AHAs or PHAs) as advised, rather than harsh scrubs.
Protect skin from sun damage
UV exposure can thicken the outer layer of skin, which interferes with natural exfoliation. A broad-spectrum SPF helps prevent this process and supports overall skin health.
Avoid overuse of actives if skin is irritated
If your skin barrier is compromised, healing becomes less efficient. Inflammatory skin conditions like eczema or rosacea can increase the risk of milia formation, so managing inflammation is key.
Cleanse thoroughly, but gently
A well-formulated cleanser can remove residual sunscreen, makeup and debris without stripping the skin. This helps keep skin clear, minimises clogging and supports healthy cell turnover. Consider a double cleanse in the evenings.
If you’re finding milia recurring, we can help develop a skincare routine that supports your skin type and minimises triggers.
